Gunters Mountain is a cool natural landmark in Alabama, U.S.. It's not a pointy peak like some mountains. Instead, it's a flat-topped mountain, also called a plateau. This special mountain helps separate the big Cumberland Plateau from the Tennessee River valley.
Discovering Gunters Mountain
Gunters Mountain is located in two counties: Marshall and Jackson. It sits just west of Guntersville Lake. This lake is a large reservoir on the Tennessee River. The mountain is about halfway between the cities of Guntersville and Scottsboro. It's also the highest point in Marshall County.
What is a Plateau?
A plateau is like a giant, flat table of land. It's raised high above the land around it. Gunters Mountain is a great example of this. It's part of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. The top of Gunters Mountain is quite flat. The town of Grant is actually located right on top of this flat area.
Other Names for the Mountain
Sometimes, Gunters Mountain is known by other names. These include Grant Mountain, Gunter Mountain, and Shell Mountain. No matter what it's called, it's an important part of Alabama's landscape.
