Guo Jingjing's Diving Journey
Guo Jingjing started diving when she was just six years old. She trained at the Baoding Training Base. By 1988, she was training for competitive diving. In 1992, she was chosen to join the Chinese national diving team.
Her first time competing at the Olympics was in 1996. She finished in 5th place. Her coach for the 2008 Olympics was Zhong Shaozhen.
Olympic Gold Medals
At the 2004 Summer Olympics, Guo won her first Olympic gold medal. She won it in the 3-meter women's synchronized springboard event with her partner Wu Minxia. Soon after, she won her first individual Olympic gold medal in the 3-meter women's springboard.
Guo became a huge sports star in China after the 2004 Olympics. She had many endorsement deals. For a short time, she was asked to step back from the national team because of too many commercial activities. She was allowed back when she agreed to focus on diving.
Guo is known in China as "The Princess of Diving." She won two more gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. After these games, Guo became the female diver with the most Olympic medals. She tied with other great divers like Fu Mingxia, Pat McCormick, and Greg Louganis for the most gold medals (four).
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Guo won gold in the women's 3-meter springboard. She scored 415.35 points. She also won gold in synchronized diving with Wu Minxia. They had won this event at the 2004 Athens Olympics and three World Championships before.
