Gurabo is a suburban area located in the northeast part of Santiago de los Caballeros, a big city in the Dominican Republic. About 42,000 people live there. Gurabo is famous for its large tobacco farms and places where amber (a type of fossilized tree resin) is found.
How Gurabo Grew
Gurabo's growth is closely connected to the nearby city of Santiago de los Caballeros. In the past, Gurabo was mostly a rural area. It had farms, factories, shops, and textile businesses.
Today, Gurabo still has these types of businesses. But it also has many new housing areas. These homes started to be built in the late 1990s as more people moved there. Because of this growth, Gurabo is now seen as a "satellite city" of Santiago. This means it's a smaller town that depends on a larger city nearby.
Famous People from Gurabo
