Playing Cricket
Guy Goodliffe loved playing cricket. He first played for Berkshire in 1901. This was in the Minor Counties Championship.
Later, while studying at the University of Oxford, he played one special cricket match. This was a first-class game for Oxford University Cricket Club. It was against Somerset in 1904.
In that match, he didn't score any runs. But he did take two wickets, which means he got two opposing batsmen out. Oxford University won the match easily. This was his only first-class game for the university. He kept playing for Berkshire until 1907. He played in ten Minor Counties Championship matches in total.
His Military Career
Guy Goodliffe had a long career in the British Army. In 1906, he became a 2nd Lieutenant. He officially joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1907.
He moved up the ranks, becoming a Captain. By October 1916, he was an Acting Major. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.
After World War I, he taught English at French military schools. In 1926, he worked at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous military training college. He retired from active service in September 1930 as a Major.
Even after retiring, his experience was needed again. He served in World War II as a Major with the Royal Artillery. He retired for a second time in July 1948. Guy Goodliffe died in Derry, Northern Ireland, on May 29, 1963.
