Gwaun Lydan is a special place in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park in Wales. It's actually the very top part of a larger mountain called Aran Fawddwy. This area is found in Gwynedd, a county in the northern part of Wales.

Gwaun Lydan sits at the end of a long ridge that stretches south from Aran Fawddwy. The name "Gwaun Lydan" comes from the Welsh language and means "wide bog." This name perfectly describes the top of the mountain.

What is Gwaun Lydan Like?

The very top of Gwaun Lydan is a small, flat area that feels quite soft and squishy underfoot. This is because it's a "boggy plateau." A plateau is a flat area of land that is higher than the land around it. "Boggy" means it's very wet and marshy, like a bog.

The highest point on this boggy plateau is a "peat hag." A peat hag is a small mound of peat, which is a type of soil made from dead plants that have partly decayed in wet conditions. You might see a few stones marking this highest spot.

Amazing Views from the Summit

From the top of Gwaun Lydan, you can see some incredible sights. Looking east, you'll get a clear view of the eastern side of Aran Fawddwy. Below it, you can spot a lake called Creiglyn Dyfi.

If you look north, you'll see other peaks like Esgeiriau Gwynion and Llechwedd Du. Adventurous hikers can even continue their journey east to reach another peak called Pen yr Allt Uchaf. The views from Gwaun Lydan truly show off the wild beauty of the Snowdonia mountains.
