The community also shares its borders with Holly Oak and other nearby neighborhoods like Silverside Heights and Hillendale. Most public services for Gwinhurst are provided by New Castle County. A Brief History of Gwinhurst

The plans for Gwinhurst first began in 1919. Soon after, the very first buildings constructed were six bungalow-style houses. These homes were built to attract buyers.

At first, the pieces of land, called lots, in Gwinhurst were quite small, measuring 20 by 100 feet. However, rules set by the seller required that any house built had to have at least 40 feet of frontage. This meant that people who wanted to build a home usually had to buy at least two lots.

By 1940, as the community grew, homes in Gwinhurst were advertised as being affordable. Buyers could even get special loans called Federal Housing Administration mortgage insurance loans to help them purchase a house.

As of 2012, there were 432 homes in the Gwinhurst community. At that time, about 1,200 people lived there.
