HMS Royal Charles was a very large and powerful warship of the Royal Navy. She was a "first-rate" ship of the line, meaning she carried the most guns. This amazing ship was designed by Sir Anthony Deane and built at Portsmouth Dockyard. She was launched in March 1673.
The Royal Charles was special because she was one of only three Royal Navy ships to have a new type of powerful naval gun called the Rupertinoe.

A Ship of Many Names
The Royal Charles had a long and interesting life. She was rebuilt and renamed several times.
First Rebuild: HMS Queen
Between 1691 and 1693, the ship was rebuilt at Woolwich Dockyard. After this, she was given a new name: HMS Queen on January 27, 1693. The Queen became the main ship, or "flagship," for Admiral Sir George Rooke. Her captain was James Wishart.
Second Rebuild: HMS Royal George
The Queen was rebuilt again at Woolwich. She was relaunched on September 20, 1715. With this second rebuild, she received another new name: HMS Royal George.
Final Name: HMS Royal Anne
In 1756, the Royal George was renamed for the last time to HMS Royal Anne. After many years of service and several transformations, the Royal Anne was taken apart in 1767.
Battles and Service
The Royal Charles played an important role in naval history.
The Battles of Schooneveld
In 1673, the Royal Charles was the flagship for Prince Rupert of the Rhine. This means she was the ship where the commander, Prince Rupert, directed the fleet. She took part in the Battle of Schooneveld, which was actually two naval battles. These battles happened off the coast of the Netherlands in June 1673. The British fleet fought against the fleet of the United Provinces, led by the famous admiral Michiel de Ruyter. These battles were part of the Franco-Dutch War.
