Hagersville is a community located in Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada. It's a place with a rich history and a growing population.

History of Hagersville

Hagersville began as a small village around 1855. This happened when Charles and David Hager bought most of the land in the center of the area. The village grew near a road that was once called the Plank Road, now known as Highway 6.

Early Growth and Railways

The community really started to grow when two railways were built. The Canada Southern Railroad arrived in 1870, and the Hamilton and Lake Erie Railway followed three years later. These railways helped Hagersville become a busy and successful village by 1879.

The Lawson Hotel and Naming Hagersville

Near the railway crossing, there was a hotel called The Junction Hotel. It later became The Lawson Hotel. For a while, it was even owned by retired NHL player Ron Murphy and known as Murph's Place. Today, it's called The Old Lawson House and provides affordable housing.

The first post office in Hagersville was inside a hotel built by Charles Hager in 1852. Joseph Seymour suggested naming the community "Hagersville" to honor the Hager brothers who helped start the settlement.

Hagersville During World War II

During World War II, Hagersville played an important role. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) set up a flight training school nearby. It was called No. 16 Service Flying Training School RCAF. This school was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, which trained pilots from many countries.

The school opened in August 1941 and closed in March 1945. After the war, the Canadian Army used the site for different purposes, calling it Camp Hagersville. The camp closed in 1964. Later, parts of the camp were used as homes, now known as "White Oaks Village," and an industrial park.

The Hagersville Tire Fire

In 1990, a very large tire fire happened near Hagersville. It released a lot of smoke into the air for seventeen days. Even though the fire was about 8 kilometers away, media often called it the "Hagersville Tire Fire" because Hagersville was the closest large town. This event was linked to long-term health concerns for some firefighters who were there.
