Erigeron aequifolius is a special and rare flowering plant. People often call it Hall's daisy or Hall's fleabane. It belongs to the aster family, which includes many well-known flowers like sunflowers and daisies!

Where Hall's Daisy Lives

This plant is very unique because it is endemic to California. This means it only grows naturally in California and nowhere else in the world! You can find Hall's daisy in fewer than 20 places. These spots are all in the southern part of the High Sierra Nevada mountains.

It grows in Mariposa, Fresno, Kern, and Tulare Counties. Hall's daisy likes to live in woodlands and coniferous forests. These are places with lots of trees like pines and firs.

What Hall's Daisy Looks Like

Erigeron aequifolius is a small perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years. It grows a stem that can reach about 20 centimeters (8 inches) tall. The stem is usually hairy and a bit sticky, which is called glandular.

The plant grows from a woody base called a caudex and has a deep taproot. Its small leaves are all about the same size. They are also spaced out evenly along the stem.

Its Flowers

At the very top of the stem, you'll usually find just one flower head. This head is actually made up of many tiny flowers! In the center, there are many yellow disc florets. These are the small, tube-shaped flowers.

Around the edge, there is a fringe of ray florets. These are the petal-like flowers that make the daisy look like a star. When they first open, they are white. But as they get older and dry, they turn a pretty blue color.

Seeds and Reproduction

After the flower blooms, it produces tiny fruits. Each fruit is called an achene. It's a small, dry fruit that contains a single seed. Each achene also has a pappus. This is a tuft of bristles, like tiny hairs, that helps the seed float away in the wind. This helps the plant spread its seeds and grow new plants.
