Hana is located on the eastern side of the island of Maui. It's known for being one of the most isolated communities in Hawaii. You can get there mainly by driving on the Hana Highway. Like many places in Hawaii, people from Polynesia probably first settled in Hana a very long time ago, between 500 and 800 AD.

Sugarcane and Tourism

The first sugarcane farm in the area started in 1849. By 1883, there were six such farms. However, by 1946, the last sugarcane farm closed down. This caused many workers to move to other parts of Maui. That same year, a hotel called the Kaʻuiki Inn opened. This hotel, now known as the Hyatt Hana-Maui Resort, helped Hana's economy change from farming to tourism.

The Famous Hana Highway

The Hana Highway is very famous for its beautiful views and winding roads. It was finished in 1926. At first, it was a gravel road, but it was the first way for cars to reach the town. Hana's population was largest in the first half of the 1900s, with about 3,500 people living there.
