Geography of Hanahan
Hanahan is located at the very southern tip of Berkeley County. Its western and southern borders touch the line between Berkeley and Charleston counties.
The city is next to North Charleston on its west and south sides. To the east, you'll find the old Naval Weapons Station. This area used to be a base for submarines and is still owned by the government. A small part of this base is actually inside Hanahan's city limits. The Navy's Nuclear Power School is also located here. To the east and north, Hanahan borders the city of Goose Creek.
CSX Transportation has a main train track that runs along Hanahan's western edge. Hanahan is mostly a place where people live. However, it also has many large warehouses in its northeast and southeast areas. These warehouses often handle goods related to the Port of Charleston, airplanes, shipping, and defense.
There are two main shopping areas in Hanahan. One is in the very south of the city, and another is in a newer area called Tanner Plantation. Because Hanahan is close to train lines and major roads, it's a great spot for storing cargo.
The historic Otranto Plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
The city covers a total area of about 11.5 square miles (29.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 10.7 square miles (27.7 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.8 square miles (2.1 square kilometers), is water.
