Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hannah was an important woman in the Bible. Her story is found in the book of 1 Samuel, chapters 1 and 2. She was married to a man named Elkanah and later became the mother of Samuel. Samuel grew up to be a very important prophet for God in Israel.

Hannah's Deep Wish

Hannah really wanted to have a child, but she couldn't. This made her very sad. She prayed to God with all her heart, asking Him to give her a son. She made a special promise to God: if He gave her a son, she would dedicate him to God's service for his whole life.

Samuel's Birth and Dedication

God heard Hannah's prayer. She soon became pregnant and gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel. This name means "heard by God." Hannah was overjoyed!

When Samuel was still a young child, Hannah kept her promise to God. She took Samuel to live at the temple. The temple was a special place where people worshiped God. There, Samuel became an apprentice to Eli, who was the high priest. This meant Samuel would learn from Eli and serve God in the temple.

Hannah's Song of Thanks

After Samuel was dedicated to God, Hannah sang a beautiful song of thanks. This song shows how grateful she was to God for answering her prayers. It also talks about God's power and how He helps those who trust in Him. Hannah's story teaches us about faith, prayer, and keeping promises.
