There is also a community named Mayfield nearby. It is a few miles northeast of the township in Paradise Township.

History of Mayfield Township
Mayfield Township was officially created in November 1867. It was formed from a part of Traverse Township.
Geography of Mayfield Township
Mayfield Township covers a total area of about 36.1 square miles (93.4 square kilometers). Most of this area, 35.9 square miles (93.0 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, 0.2 square miles (0.4 square kilometers), is water.
The township is located in the southern part of Grand Traverse County. It shares a border with Wexford County.
Main Roads in Mayfield Township
- M-37 is a major highway that runs north and south through the middle of the township. It comes into Mayfield Township from the village of Buckley. Buckley is partly in Wexford County. M-37 then goes north for three miles. After two sharp turns, it continues north. The highway leaves the township and goes into Blair Township. From there, it continues north to Traverse City.
- M-113 starts in the northwest part of Mayfield Township. It begins where it meets M-37. This highway then goes straight east for a few miles. It then enters Paradise Township and passes through Kingsley.
Communities in Mayfield Township
Several smaller communities are part of or near Mayfield Township:
- Bartlett was once home to a rural post office. This post office operated in Mayfield Township from 1879 until 1903.
- Hannah is a small community. A post office was set up in Hannah in 1881 and closed in 1904. In 1885, a Catholic church was built there. The community was named after the Hannah Lay and Company. This company was involved in lumber operations in Grand Traverse County. The company's founder, Perry Hannah, later became the first mayor of Traverse City. Today, Hannah still has a catholic school and a church parish.
- The village of Buckley is just south of the Mayfield Township border. It is located in Wexford County.
- The village of Kingsley is located just east of Mayfield Township.
- The city of Traverse City is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of Mayfield Township.
