Hannibal Alkhas (born in 1930, died in 2010) was a talented artist. He was a sculptor, a painter, and a writer. He came from an Assyrian Christian family in Iran. He spent his childhood and teenage years in different cities in Iran, like Kermanshah, Ahwaz, and Tehran.

His Early Life and Education

In 1951, Hannibal Alkhas moved to the United States to study. He first studied philosophy for three years at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. After that, from 1953 to 1958, he went to the Art Institute of Chicago. There, he earned his art degrees, becoming a Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts.

Returning to Iran and Teaching Art

In 1959, Hannibal Alkhas's father, Rabi Adai Alkhas, passed away. His father was a famous Assyrian writer. After this, Hannibal returned to Iran. He began teaching painting, drawing, and art history at the Tehran School of Fine Arts. He taught there for four years. During this time, he opened the Gilgamesh gallery. This was the first modern art gallery in Iran. It helped young artists show their work.

Teaching in the United States and Iran Again

In 1963, Hannibal Alkhas went back to the United States. He taught at Monticello College in Illinois. He became the head of the art department there. In 1969, Hannibal returned to Iran once more. He spent the next eleven years teaching at Tehran University. He also taught at Islamic Azad University in Iran.

His Art and Legacy

Hannibal Alkhas also drew pictures for books. He wrote many poems. He also translated poems into and out of Assyrian. His artworks have been shown in many exhibitions. These shows took place in Iran, Europe, Canada, Australia, and the US. Hannibal Alkhas passed away on September 14, 2010. He was 80 years old. He died in the United States after battling cancer.
