History of Harbor
The area where Harbor is today once had a post office named "Chetco." This name came from the nearby Chetco River. The Chetco post office opened in 1863. It moved a few times before it closed in 1910.
Meanwhile, a new post office called Harbor was opened in 1894. This new office was located near the mouth of the Chetco River. The name "Harbor" might have come from a company called the Chetco Harbor Land and Townsite Company.
Harbor's Geography
Harbor is located in the southwestern part of Curry County. You can find it along U.S. Route 101, which is a major highway. It's about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Brookings. It's also about 5 miles (8 km) north of the California state line.
The total area of Harbor is about 2.31 square miles (5.98 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1.92 square miles (4.97 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.39 square miles (1.01 square kilometers), is water.
Harbor's Climate
Harbor has a special kind of weather called a cool-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has cool winters with a lot of rain. However, these rainy periods are often broken up by sunny, cool days.
Summers in Harbor are usually mild and dry. There's not much rain in July and August. It's rare for temperatures to reach 90°F (32°C) or higher. It's also rare for temperatures to drop to 32°F (0°C) or lower. The hottest temperature ever recorded was 108.2°F (42.3°C) on July 9, 2008. The coldest was 18°F (-8°C) on December 8, 1972.
Snow doesn't fall often in Harbor. On average, it gets about 0.7 inches (1.8 cm) of snow each year.
The Brookings Effect
Harbor sometimes experiences unusually warm temperatures. This can happen in both winter and summer. Temperatures can even reach 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C) throughout the year. This warm weather is due to something called the Brookings effect or Chetco effect.
This effect happens because Harbor is at the bottom of the Klamath Mountains. Winds blowing down from these mountains get compressed and warm up as they reach Harbor. This is similar to the warm, dry Santa Ana winds in Southern California. Because of this, flowers like daffodils often bloom early, sometimes in February.
