Hardgate is a village located in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It's a place with a long history, even though it's now considered part of the larger town of Clydebank.
A Peek into Hardgate's Past
Hardgate has been settled for a very long time, possibly since the neolithic period (that's the New Stone Age!). We know this because of ancient discoveries found nearby. For example, there's a burial site at Knappers Farm. You can also find the Cochno Stone, which is a large rock covered in mysterious cup and ring marks carved by people thousands of years ago. Near Cochno Loch, there's also an old burial chamber, which was a special place where ancient people buried their dead. These findings show that people lived and thrived here a very, very long time ago.
How Hardgate Grew
In the 1800s, a company called Dunn's Mills had a cotton mill in Hardgate. This mill made thread and yarn. Sadly, it was completely destroyed during the Clydebank Blitz in 1941, which was a series of heavy air raids during World War II.
After World War II, the village started to grow a lot. The Clydebank town council built many new houses. Later, in the early 1970s, a building company called Wimpey also built more homes on land that used to be open green spaces.
Hardgate Today
Even though Hardgate is an old settlement, it's now managed as part of the nearby town of Clydebank. It's grouped with the neighboring village of Duntocher. Hardgate, Duntocher, and Faifley are all part of the Kilpatrick area within the West Dunbartonshire local authority. In 2011, the combined population of these areas was 12,719 people.
Education in Hardgate
The village has one school for children, called Goldenhill Primary School. It is a non-denominational school, meaning it is not linked to any specific religion.
