Hargovind Laxmishanker "H. L." Trivedi (born August 31, 1932 – died October 2, 2019) was an Indian doctor. He was a specialist in kidneys (a nephrologist), a scientist who studied the body's defenses (an immunologist), and a doctor who performed organ transplants (a transplant surgeon). He also researched stem cells.
Dr. Trivedi was a leader in organ transplant medicine in India. He helped start the Kidney Hospital in Ahmedabad. He and his team performed over 5,200 kidney transplantations, which is a huge number! For his important work, he received the Padma Shri award in 2015, which is one of India's highest honors.

Early Life and Education
Hargovind Trivedi was born on August 31, 1932, in a village called Charadva, near Halvad in Gujarat, India. His father, Laxmishankar Trivedi, was a teacher.
Hargovind finished his early schooling in Lunsar village. He then studied science in Rajkot from 1951 to 1953. After that, he earned his medical degree (MBBS) from B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad in 1963.
His Medical Career
After becoming a doctor, Dr. Trivedi went to the United States for two years to get more training at the Cleveland Clinic. He then worked as a doctor for eight years in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
In 1977, he decided to return to India. He wanted to help people in his home country. He became a professor of kidney medicine at B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad.
Starting the Kidney Hospital
On October 7, 1981, Dr. Trivedi founded the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC). This hospital is also known as the Kidney Hospital and is located on the campus of the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. His friends, Rasiklal Doshi and Mafatlal Mehta, helped by donating money to start the hospital.
The institute moved to a new building in 1992. In 1997, the Institute of Transplantation Sciences (ITS) was also started on the same campus. Today, this hospital is the largest kidney hospital in the world, with 438 beds!
Amazing Achievements
Dr. Trivedi and his team performed more than 5,200 kidney transplants at the institute. This is a remarkable achievement that saved many lives. The hospital is also the only public hospital in India that performs liver transplantations.
In 2015, the IKDRC-ITS was upgraded to become the Gujarat University of Transplantation Sciences. Dr. Trivedi was chosen to be its Pro-Chancellor, which is a very important leadership role.
Other Contributions
Dr. Trivedi also started the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation. This group helps doctors and scientists learn more about organ transplants. He was also the first chief editor for two important medical journals: the Indian Journal of Transplantation and the Indian Journal of Nephrology.
He held patents for new ways to use stem cells in transplants. These ideas could help the body accept new organs and even help produce insulin. He also wrote an autobiography called Tryst with Destiny in 1996, which was later translated into Gujarati.
Recognition and Awards

Dr. Trivedi received many honors for his incredible work. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCP(C)).
In 2006, the Institute of Transplantation Sciences was renamed the Dr. H. L. Trivedi Institute of Transplantation Sciences in his honor. He also received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from King George's Medical University in 2009. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation honored him as a Nagar Ratna (City Gem) in 2014.
In 2015, the Government of India gave him the Padma Shri award. This is the fourth highest award a civilian can receive in India. He was also honored by The Transplantation Society in 2018.
Later Life
Dr. Hargovind Laxmishanker Trivedi passed away on October 2, 2019, in Ahmedabad after a long illness. He suffered from health issues affecting his brain and liver, including Parkinson's disease.
