History of Harrah's Lake Tahoe
How It All Started
Harrah's first came to Lake Tahoe when William F. Harrah bought George's Gateway Club in January 1955. This was the start of his gaming business in the area. Harrah’s Lake Club opened on June 20, 1955. This first club is now known as Harveys Lake Tahoe.
In 1958, Bill Harrah bought parts of the Stateline Country Club and the Nevada Club. These were located across the street from his first club. This is where the current Harrah's Lake Tahoe stands today. He then opened the Harrah's Stateline Club.
Entertainment Becomes Key
The famous South Shore Room opened in 1959. It cost a lot of money to build this large showroom. This room could seat 750 people. The very first performer there was the comedian Red Skelton. This showed that Harrah's wanted to make entertainment a very important part of their resort.
In 1963, a famous event happened at the South Shore Room. Frank Sinatra Jr., the son of singer Frank Sinatra, was performing there. He was briefly taken from the hotel after his show.
Building the Big Hotel
William Harrah had wanted to build a large hotel at Lake Tahoe for many years. In 1971, his company became public, which helped him get the money he needed. In 1972, they started building his dream hotel. It was an 18-story building with 250 rooms.
The hotel officially opened on November 9, 1973. Each room was very fancy and large. They even had two bathrooms, TVs, and telephones. This hotel was the first casino hotel in history to receive a "five-star diamond rating." This showed how luxurious and well-designed it was.
The hotel was made even bigger in 1976. They added 290 more rooms for guests.
Changes and Updates Over Time
In 1980, the hotel and casino had some damage. This happened when a bomb exploded at the neighboring casino, Harveys Lake Tahoe. Harrah's was connected to Harveys by an underground tunnel. Most of the damage to Harrah's was from broken windows. Luckily, no one was hurt in the explosion.
In 2000, Harrah's completed a big renovation. They spent $26 million to update the casino, the hotel rooms, and the restaurants.
Starting in 2005, Caesars Entertainment began a major effort to remodel Harrah's Lake Tahoe. They updated many floors of the hotel. The rooms were made into mini-suites with new furniture and decor. This remodel was finished in mid-2006.
After the rooms were updated, Caesars also remodeled the hotel's lobby in 2007. They added a food court and a fancy jewelry store. In 2008, they added a high-end Chinese restaurant called "Gi Fu Loh."
In 2017, the ownership of Harrah's Lake Tahoe changed. It was transferred to Vici Properties. However, Caesars Entertainment still operates the resort.
Today, you can still access Harveys Lake Tahoe through an underground path. This path has an arcade and live music at Sammy Hagar's CaboWabo.
