History of Harveys Lake Tahoe
Early Beginnings
Harveys first opened its doors in 1944. It was started by Harvey Gross and his wife Llewellyn. They were from Sacramento.
In 1963, they built their first tall hotel building. It was an 11-story tower with 197 rooms. This was a big step for the hotel.
The 1980 Incident
On August 27, 1980, something unusual happened at the hotel. A very large bomb was placed there. The area around the hotel was cleared, so no one was hurt.
The bomb was set off by the FBI. It left a huge hole in the ground. A person had placed the bomb to try and get money from the hotel.
Changes and Growth
Harvey Gross passed away in 1983. But his family kept running the business. In 1985, they sold another property called Harvey's Inn. It later became the Lakeside Inn.
A new, tall glass building called the "Lake Tower" opened in 1986. It was 18 stories high. Around the same time, the hotel changed its name to the current Harveys brand.
Becoming a Public Company
In 1994, Harveys became a public company. This meant people could buy shares in the company. After this, Harveys started new projects. They worked with Hard Rock America on a casino in Las Vegas. They also opened casinos in Central City, Colorado, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.
In the late 1990s, the famous actor Bill Cosby became a spokesman for Harveys. His picture was even put on some casino chips. He also filmed TV specials at the casino.
New Ownership
In 1999, a company called Colony Capital bought most of Harveys Casino Resorts. Then, in 2001, Harrah's Entertainment bought Harveys. Harrah's Entertainment later became Caesars Entertainment.
In 2017, the ownership of the property changed again. It went to Vici Properties. Harveys Lake Tahoe is now leased back to Caesars Entertainment to operate.
