Harrisville was a small community located in Cardston County, Alberta, Canada. It was found southwest of the town of Cardston. This community was home to a school district and an important Roman Catholic church.

The church in Harrisville was the very first Catholic church built in the southern part of Alberta. Sadly, it was damaged by a strong wind in 1906. The school in Harrisville served the community for many years before it closed its doors in 1948.

St. Stephen's Church: A Historic Building

St. Stephen's Church in Harrisville holds a special place in history. It was the first Catholic church to be built in the southernmost area of Alberta.

Building and Rebuilding

The church was first built around 1899 or 1901. However, a powerful windstorm blew it down in 1906. But the community didn't give up! They rebuilt the church in 1907, choosing a different spot for its new location.

Closure and Historic Recognition

St. Stephen's Church continued to serve the community until it was closed in 1965. Years later, on September 18, 1989, the church was officially recognized for its historical importance. It was listed on the Alberta Register of Historic Places. This means it's a protected site because of its value to Alberta's history.
