Harry Mazer (born May 31, 1925, in New York City – died April 7, 2016, in Montpelier, Vermont) was an American author who wrote many popular books for children and young adults. He was known for his "realistic" stories. He wrote 22 novels, including The Solid Gold Kid, The Island Keeper, Heroes Don't Run, and Snow Bound. Snow Bound was even made into a TV special! He also wrote some poems and short stories.

Harry Mazer's Life and Books
Early Life and War Experience
Harry Mazer went to the Bronx High School of Science. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He served from 1943 to 1945. He became a sergeant.
In April 1945, his B-17 bomber was shot down over Czechoslovakia. He received a Purple Heart and an Air Medal for his service. His experiences during the war later inspired many of his historical fiction books. These include The Last Mission and the Boy at War series. This series includes A Boy at War, A Boy No More, and Heroes Don't Run.
After the war, Mazer returned to the U.S. He went to Union College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. From 1950 to 1955, he worked for the New York Central Railroad. He was also an English teacher for a year in 1959 at the Central Square School. In 1960, he earned a Master of Arts degree from Syracuse University.

Harry Mazer wrote 22 novels for young readers. His books are known for being very real and relatable. He often wrote about characters facing tough challenges. Many of his stories are set during important historical times, like World War II.

Awards and Family
Harry Mazer won many awards for his writing. The American Library Association named several of his books as 'Best Books'. He also received The Knickerbocker Award from the New York Library Association in 2001. In 2003, he won The ALAN Award for his great contributions to young adult literature.
Harry Mazer also wrote three books with his late wife, Norma Fox Mazer. His daughter, Anne Mazer, is also a well-known author.
