Vice-Admiral Hasan Hafeez Ahmed (often called H.H. Ahmed) was a very important officer in the Pakistan Navy. He was the first person to hold the title of Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) for the Pakistan Navy. This means he was the top leader of the Navy. He served in this role from 1972 until he passed away in 1975.

He took over the Navy's command after the previous leader, Vice-Admiral Muzaffar Hassan, was no longer in charge. Even though he was given a very high position, he kept his rank as a three-star Vice-Admiral.

Early Life and Education

Hasan Hafeez Ahmed was born in 1926 in Multan, which was then part of British India. Today, Multan is in Pakistan. He went to school in Multan.

After finishing high school in 1943, he joined the Royal Indian Navy. This was the navy for India when it was under British rule. He took part in World War II during this time.

Naval Training and Specialization

In 1945, he went to a special naval college in England called the Britannia Royal Naval College. He finished his studies there in 1947. When he returned to British India, he joined the newly formed Pakistan Navy. He became a Sub Lieutenant, which is a junior officer rank.

He continued his training with the Royal Navy in the United Kingdom. From 1947 to 1949, he learned many technical skills important for naval operations.

Military Career and Key Roles

Hasan Hafeez Ahmed continued to grow in his naval career. He attended more advanced military colleges to improve his leadership skills.

Important Postings

In 1964, he went to the Joint Service Defence College in England. He graduated in 1965 with a degree in joint staff operations. This means he learned how different parts of the military (like the army, navy, and air force) work together.

When he came back to Pakistan, he worked in the Ministry of Defence. He was a Director of Naval Operations. He played a part in the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965. After this war, he worked at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington D.C. as a military representative until 1966.

In 1970, he became the first leader of the Pakistan Naval Academy. This is where new naval officers are trained. He held the rank of Commodore then. In 1971, he was promoted to Rear-Admiral and became the Commander of the Coast.

Leading the Navy

After the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, he continued to lead the coastal defense. In 1972, he was chosen to be the first Chief of Naval Staff. He was a junior officer at the time, but he was selected for this very important role.

As the naval chief, his main job was to make the Pakistan Navy strong again. He worked hard to rebuild and improve it. In a short time, he helped the Navy become a "three-dimensional force." This means it could operate on the surface of the water, underwater, and in the air. He did this by starting the Pakistan Naval Air Arm (naval aviation). He also moved the Navy's main headquarters (NHQ) to Rawalpindi in 1974. This placed it closer to the Army's main headquarters.

Legacy

Hasan Hafeez Ahmed passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 1975, at the age of 49. He was still serving as the Chief of Naval Staff when he died. He was one of the few top military leaders in Pakistan who died while still in office.
