Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (born August 25, 1934 – died January 8, 2017) was a very important Iranian politician. He was the Chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council of Iran from 1989 until he passed away in 2017. This council helps solve problems between different parts of the government.
His Time as President
Rafsanjani was the President of Iran for two terms, from 1989 to 1997. During his time as president, he focused on rebuilding Iran after the Iran–Iraq War. He also worked on improving Iran's economy.
After his presidency, he tried to become president again in 2005. However, he did not win that election.
Later Life and Passing
After his time as president, Rafsanjani continued to be an active figure in Iranian politics. He remained the head of the Expediency Discernment Council.
Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died on January 8, 2017, in Tehran. He was 82 years old.
