The Hashemite University (الجامعة الهاشمية), often called HU, is a public university in Jordan. It opened its doors in 1995. The university is located near the city of Zarqa. It uses a "credit hour" system for studies. This means each course has a certain number of hours. It was the first university in Jordan to use a "Two-Summer-Semester" system.
The Hashemite University offers many different master's degree programs. It also has a special program for students from other countries to study there.

Where is the University?
The Hashemite University is in the city of Zarqa. It is right next to two big highways. The main entrance, called the west gate, opens onto the highway that connects Amman with Mafraq and Irbid. From there, you can even reach Syria. The south gate leads to the highway that goes to AzZarqa and then to Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
University History
The idea to create the Hashemite University started on June 19, 1991. Students began attending classes on September 16, 1995. The university campus covers a large area of 8519 acres. The university has even received a special award for its work in renewable energy and higher education.
What Can You Study?
The university has 19 different colleges and institutes. It offers 52 different subjects for undergraduate students. These are students working towards their first university degree. It also has 35 subjects for postgraduate students. These include master's and doctorate degrees.
Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine started in 2005-2006. The first medical students joined in 2006-2007. The faculty works closely with the Ministry of Health. This helps students learn more about medicine. It also helps them gain practical experience.
Students here can earn a "Doctor of Medicine" degree. This takes 257 credit hours of study. The study plan was updated in 2011. This was to make sure students got more hands-on practice. King Abdullah II officially opened the faculty in 2010.
Faculty of Engineering
The Faculty of Engineering began in August 1998. It offers degrees in eight different engineering fields. These include Architecture, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Biomedical, Mechanical, Computer, and Mechatronics Engineering. Students can also get master's degrees in Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Other master's programs include Energy Systems and Maintenance Management. In 2018, the faculty met the high standards of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
Faculty of Sciences
The Faculty of Science started in 1995-1996. It was first part of a bigger Science and Arts Faculty. Today, it has four main departments. These are Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biotechnology.
Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts has been part of the university since it opened in 1995. Students can study many interesting subjects here. These include Arabic Language and Literature, and English Language and Literature. They can also study Humanities and Social Sciences. The faculty also offers master's degrees in these areas. There is even a PhD program in Arabic Language and Literature.
Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences
This faculty also started in September 1995. It offers many programs to help students learn about business and money. You can study Banking and Financial sciences, Accounting, and Business Administration. Other options include Economics, Insurance, and Hotel Management. The faculty also has master's programs. Many more students have joined this faculty over the years.
Faculty of Allied Health Sciences
This faculty opened in 1998. Students first enrolled in 2000. It offers bachelor's degrees in important health fields. These include Clinical Nutrition, Physical and Occupational Therapy, and Medical Imaging. You can also study Medical Laboratory Sciences. A master's degree in Medical Laboratory Science is also available.
Faculty of Nursing
The Faculty of Nursing was established in 1999. It helps train nurses for Jordan's health sector. It offers a bachelor's degree in Nursing. There are also two master's degree programs. These are in Cancer Nursing and Adult Health Nursing.
Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences
This faculty started in 1998. It aims to meet the growing need for sports professionals. The first students joined in 1999-2000. It offers two bachelor's degree programs. These are in Physical Education and Sport Sciences, and Coaching and Sport Management.
Faculty of Educational Sciences
The Faculty of Educational Sciences is very important to the university. It helps students learn about teaching and education. It offers programs at both bachelor's and master's levels. These include Educational Psychology and Art Class teaching. It also covers Educational Foundations and Administrations.
The Faculty of Prince Hussein Bin Abdulla II of Information Technology (IT)
This IT faculty was created in 2001-2002. It helps students keep up with the fast changes in technology. It offers bachelor's degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Business Management Technology. There are also master's degrees in Information and Creativity Systems.
Queen Rania Faculty for Childhood (QRFC)
This faculty started in 2002. It was the first of its kind in Jordan. Its main goal is to train people to work with children and their families. It offers bachelor's degrees in Early Childhood Education and Special Education.
Queen Rania Faculty of Tourism and Heritage (QRITH)
This faculty was established in 1999-2000. It focuses on tourism, protecting old sites, and managing cultural places. It offers bachelor's degrees in Sustainable Tourism and Cultural Resources Management.
Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment
This faculty started in 1999. It aims to help the university get more involved in environmental issues. It has departments for Land Management, Earth Sciences, and Water Management.
Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
This faculty offers a bachelor's degree in Pharmacy. Students can choose to focus on Administrative Pharmacy or Industrial Pharmacy. The first students joined in 2013. In 2015, a special "hypothetical pharmacy" was set up. This helps students get practical training.
Deanship of Students' Affairs
This department started in 1995-1996. It helps students grow physically, mentally, and socially. It encourages students to be future leaders. It also helps them feel a sense of belonging to Jordan. The deanship has several departments. These include student care, health care, and athletic activities. There are also cultural and artistic activities. Many student clubs are available, like the Arabic language club and the debate club. There's even a Wikipedia club!
The deanship also has facilities like a theater and halls for events. There are student lounges, a music room, and a drawing studio. Students can also find a supermarket, restaurant, and post office. The university has indoor and outdoor sports areas.
Deanship of Scientific Research
This department works with the Ministry of Higher Education. It publishes three international science journals. These journals share new research findings.

Faculty of Graduate Studies
The Hashemite University offers 35 programs for master's, doctoral, and higher diploma degrees. This faculty accepts excellent students into these programs. The study plans are modern and meet international standards.
El-Hassan Bin-Talal Faculty of Arid Land Studies
This faculty was named after Prince El-Hassan Bin-Talal. It focuses on studying dry lands, which make up about 80% of Jordan. Its goal is to find ways to grow more food in these areas. It also aims to share its knowledge with other countries facing similar conditions. The faculty wants to find solutions for using natural resources wisely. This includes dealing with climate change and water shortages. It also aims to make dry lands more productive.
Library
The university library has about 250,000 paper books and many online scientific documents. It uses a modern system to track books. This system uses radio waves to identify items.
Main Library
The main library uses a computer system called HORIZON. This system helps with buying new books, organizing them, and lending them out. The library is part of several important library groups.
Special Libraries
- The Medical Library is located in the medical college. It holds books about medicine.
- The Childhood Library has books about children, families, and related topics. It has about 7,000 books.
- Social Work Library was started with help from a foundation.
- American Studies and Resources Corner has resources on American literature, history, and culture.
- British Studies and Resources Corner focuses on English literature and language.
University Projects
- The Hashemite Sun Project: The university built a large solar power project. It produces 5 megawatts of electricity. This is twice what the university needs! Prince El Hassan bin Talal attended its opening. In October 2017, the project won a golden prize for "Large Energy Project."
- North Classrooms' Compound Project: This building was named after King Hareth the Fourth. It was finished in 2016. It cost about 10 million Jordanian dinars. It has 35 classrooms, each holding 100 students. There are also large lecture halls and offices for teachers. It can hold 4560 students per hour.
- South Classrooms' Compound Project: This project started in 2014 and was funded by Abu Dhabi. It cost about 11 million Jordanian dinars. It has 35 classrooms, engineering studios, and labs. It also has offices for teachers and staff.
- The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Building: In 2016, the university began building a new home for the pharmacy faculty. It will have classrooms, advanced labs, a pharmacy library, and offices.
Financial Status
The Hashemite University manages its money very well. It does not have any debt. It has saved a lot of money each year by reducing unnecessary costs. For example, it controls overtime hours for staff. It also develops its own technology programs instead of buying them from outside. The university has also increased its income by getting funding for projects from other sources.
Affiliations and Rankings
The Hashemite University is part of several international groups. These include the International Association of Universities and the Association of Arab Universities. The university was ranked among the top universities in the Middle East for its scientific research. It was also ranked among the best 300 universities in the world in 2017 for BRICS & Emerging Economies.
