History of Hasselt
Hasselt has a long and interesting past. It officially became a city in 1252. This meant it gained special "city rights." These rights gave the people more freedom and control over their town.
Hanseatic League Member
Around 1350, Hasselt joined the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful group of trading cities. Being a member helped Hasselt grow and become important for trade. Ships would carry goods along the waterways.
Changes Over Time
However, by about 1550, Hasselt's trade slowed down. Other cities became better places for business. They had better locations and equipment. This caused Hasselt's economy to become less strong.
Modern Hasselt
In 2001, some changes happened. The towns of Hasselt, Genemuiden, and Zwartsluis joined together. They formed the new municipality of Zwartewaterland. Hasselt became the main administrative center for this new area. This means many important offices are located there. As of January 1, 2021, about 7,385 people live in Hasselt.
