Leading NATO

Hastings Ismay was chosen to be the very first Secretary General of NATO in 1952. This was a huge job. He helped set up this important organization and guided its early years. He famously said that NATO's purpose was "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down." This meant keeping the Soviet Union from expanding, ensuring the United States stayed involved in Europe, and preventing Germany from becoming a military threat again.

Ismay retired from NATO in 1957. He had a long and distinguished career serving his country. He was made a Baron, which is a high honor in the United Kingdom. He passed away in 1965. Hastings Ismay is remembered for his quiet but powerful influence during some of the most important times in modern history.
