Geography of Hatfield

Hatfield covers an area of about 1.3 square miles (3.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The community is located right next to Lake Arbutus. This lake was created by building a dam on the Black River.

The dam helps to control the water flow. It also releases water to a special channel. This channel helps power a hydroelectric powerhouse. A hydroelectric powerhouse uses the force of moving water to create electricity.

Hatfield was started by Norbert St. Germaine in 1836. In the 1800s, the main business in the area was the logging and lumber industry. Logging means cutting down trees, and the lumber industry turns those trees into wood products.

The Black River was very important for this industry. Logs were floated down the river from central Wisconsin. They traveled all the way to the Mississippi River valley. This was the main way to transport the wood. Later, in 1872, the Green Bay and Western Railroad arrived in Hatfield. This made it even easier to move goods and people.
