Haugan (also called Waugan) is a very small community in Mineral County, Montana, United States. It's not an official city, but a "census-designated place," which means it's a special area counted by the government. Haugan is located about 16 miles east of the Idaho border. It's also about 90 miles west of a larger city called Missoula. The St. Regis River flows right through the community. In 2020, only 58 people lived in Haugan.

The Story of Haugan

Haugan got its name from H. G. Haugan. He was a land commissioner for a big railroad company called the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. The community was first set up to help trains. It was a "pusher station" for the Milwaukee Road railroad. This meant extra engines would help push trains up the steep Bitterroot Range of the Rocky Mountains.

Haugan faced a big challenge in 1910. It was one of many towns that were destroyed during the huge Great Fire of 1910. Even after the fire, Haugan had a post office for almost 70 years. It first opened in 1911 but closed in 1944. Then, it reopened in 1948 and stayed open until 1983.

Where is Haugan?

Haugan is surrounded by the beautiful Lolo National Forest. It's also home to the Savenac Nursery Historic District, which is a special historical area. If you like winter sports, the nearby Haugan/Randolph Creek Loop Snowmobile Trail is great for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. You can also find Haugan Mountain close by.

Many people know Haugan because of its "Silver Dollars" tourist area. You might see big Billboards on Interstate 90 in western Montana and northern Idaho that tell drivers how far away it is.

Haugan's Weather

Haugan has a climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Here's a look at the typical weather:
