Hayley Jane Lewis, born on March 2, 1974, is a famous Australian swimmer. She is best known for winning five gold medals and one bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games when she was only 15 years old. After her swimming career, Hayley also hosted the TV show The Biggest Loser.
Early Life
Hayley Lewis was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She went to Brisbane State High School. She finished school in 1991. In her last year, she was the captain of the Girls Swimming Team.
Sporting Achievements
In 1990, when she was just 15, Hayley Lewis became very well known. She won five gold medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. These gold medals were for the 200-metre freestyle, 400-metre freestyle, 200-metre butterfly, and 400-metre individual medley. She also won gold in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay. She also earned a bronze medal in the 200-metre individual medley.
At the 1991 World Aquatics Championships in Perth, she continued her success. She won a gold medal in the 200-metre freestyle. She also took home silver medals in the 400-metre freestyle and 400-metre individual medley. Hayley also won a bronze medal in the 200-metre butterfly.
Later in her career, Lewis focused on the 800-metre freestyle event. Her best result in this event was a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics. She also won a silver medal at the 1994 Rome World Championships. At the Barcelona Olympics, she won a bronze medal in the 400-metre freestyle. In 2001, at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships, Lewis won a bronze medal in the 5-kilometre open water swim. She competed in three Olympic Games during her career.
Life After Swimming
Hayley Lewis was the host of the Australian TV show The Biggest Loser from 2010 to 2014. In 2002, she opened the first swimming center inside a major shopping mall in Australia. This was at Westfield Carindale in Brisbane.
In 2010, the pool was taken down because of new building plans. Now, Hayley owns a gift and home goods store in Brisbane called Coming Up Roses. In April 2011, she published her first business book, Dream Believe Create.
Hayley married her childhood sweetheart, Greg Taylor, in 1997. They have two sons, Jacob and Kai. Her younger son, Kai Taylor, also became an Olympic swimmer. He won a silver medal in the 4x100 metre freestyle relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Hayley also writes for a website called Live4, sharing entertainment and lifestyle tips.
Awards and Recognition
Hayley Lewis has received several important awards for her achievements. In 1997, she was added to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. She received an Australian Sports Medal in 2000. In 2003, she was given a Medal of the Order of Australia.
