History of Hazel Dell
How Hazel Dell Got Its Name
The first settlers in Hazel Dell were Reese and Sarah J. Anderson. They were pioneers, meaning they were among the first people to settle in this area. Sarah Anderson named the area "Hazel Dell" because of the many filbert trees growing on their land. This was near what is now 78th Street and Highway 99. Sarah also gave land for the very first school in Hazel Dell.
For a short time, people thought about calling the area "Bear Gulch." Later, some local business leaders wanted to change the name to "Basilville." This was to honor a successful merchant named Basil Dhanens. However, Mr. Dhanens politely said no to the idea. He passed away in 1972.
Growth and Development
Hazel Dell and a nearby area called Minnehaha were among the first places to grow a lot after World War II. More homes were built in these areas. Later, other communities like Lake Shore, Felida, and Salmon Creek also started to grow.
Today, much of the new home building has moved to the east of Vancouver. This area is between Interstate 205 and Camas.
From Farms to Shops
Until the early 1970s, it was common to see horses and dairy cattle in Hazel Dell. You might even spot them near Interstate 5 and Highway 99. However, dairy farming eventually stopped. Now, Hazel Dell is mostly known for its many shopping centers. There are only a few small farms left.
