What is a Kettle Lake?
Heart Lake is a great example of a kettle lake. These lakes were formed a very long time ago by melting glaciers. When huge ice chunks broke off glaciers and got buried in the ground, they later melted. This left behind big holes in the earth that filled with water, creating lakes like Heart Lake. Many kettle lakes can be found in this part of Michigan.
