Heights is a small village, often called a hamlet, in Greater Manchester, England. It is part of the Saddleworth area, which is within the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. Heights is located just north of Delph and about four miles northeast of Oldham. Historically, this area was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

What is Heights Like?

Heights is a quiet place with a few buildings. It used to have a local pub called the Royal Oak Heights, but it closed in 2020. Most of the buildings are homes where people live.

St Thomas' Church

One important building in Heights is St Thomas' Church, Friarmere. This church is no longer used for regular services, but it is still a special place. People still use its graveyard for burials, and the churchyard is kept tidy. You might even recognize the churchyard and graveyard from a movie! They were featured in the film The Parole Officer, which starred Steve Coogan.

Famous People from Heights

Heights has been home to some interesting people. One notable person was Becket Whitehead. He was known for collecting old folk songs. Some of the songs he collected include "A Beggin' I Will Go," "Gallant Poacher," "Four Loom Weaver," "Mowing Match," and "Jim the Carter's Lad." Becket Whitehead lived in Heights Lane Cottage and was buried at St. Thomas Church in 1966.
