A Look Back: Helechal's History
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,485 people lived in the Helechal barrio at that time.

What to See and Do in Helechal
Getting to Helechal can be an adventure! It is not easy to reach from San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. This is because Helechal is deep inside the Cordillera Central. This is the main mountain range in Puerto Rico. The roads leading there are very winding and curvy.
One of the most interesting places in Helechal is a restaurant called Los Aviones. This name means "The Airplanes" in Spanish. Why? Because the restaurant is made from two real airplanes! Both tourists and local people love to visit this unique spot. To get to the restaurant, you even cross a fun rope bridge!
