Hell Roaring Lake is a beautiful alpine lake located in Custer County, Idaho, United States. It sits high up in the mountains, specifically in the Sawtooth Mountains. This area is part of the amazing Sawtooth National Recreation Area, which is a protected natural space.

Discovering Hell Roaring Lake

Hell Roaring Lake is a type of lake called a glacial lake. This means it was formed by glaciers moving and shaping the land long ago. The lake is about 13.3 miles (21.4 km) southwest of a town called Stanley. It's a great spot for nature lovers and adventurers.

Getting to the Lake

You can reach Hell Roaring Lake from State Highway 75. This highway runs through the beautiful Sawtooth Valley. To get closer to the lake, you'll need to use a forest road.

  • There's a trailhead about two miles from the lake on Sawtooth National Forest road 097. This road is a bit rough, so you'll need a vehicle with high clearance.
  • If your car can't handle road 097, or if you're traveling with horses, there's another trailhead. It's about two miles further down along forest road 210.

Exploring the Wilderness

Hell Roaring Lake is located inside the Sawtooth Wilderness. A wilderness area is a special place where nature is kept wild and untouched. To visit, you'll need a wilderness permit. You can usually get these permits at the trailheads.

The lake is surrounded by tall, impressive mountains. One of them is called the Finger of Fate, which stands at 9,775 feet (2,979 m) tall. There are also other peaks around the lake. Upstream from Hell Roaring Lake, you can find several other pretty lakes. These include Imogene Lake, Profile Lake, Mushroom Lake, and Lucille Lake.
