A Look Back: Henderson's History
Henderson became a suburb in 1915. The government set aside this land for important defence uses. A big naval base was planned here by a famous leader named Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson. That's why the area was sometimes called "Henderson Naval Base". The name 'Henderson' was officially approved for the suburb in 1973.
In 2019, the nearby suburb of Munster was split up. Part of it became a new suburb called Lake Coogee. Another part was added to Henderson, making Henderson bigger. These changes happened on March 30, 2020.
Where is Henderson?
Henderson is surrounded by different areas. To the north is Russell Road. To the west, it borders Cockburn Sound, which is a large body of water. The Perth freight railway line is to the east. To the south, you'll find Dalison Avenue and the border with the City of Kwinana.
The Australian Marine Complex
The Australian Marine Complex is a very important place in Henderson. It is located right on Cockburn Sound. This complex is one of the biggest places in Australia for building and repairing ships.
It has special facilities called dry docks. These are like big bathtubs that can be drained so workers can fix the bottom of ships. It also has Australia's second largest ship-lift. This giant lift can raise ships weighing up to 8,065 tonnes out of the water!
Many important companies work here. Some of them include ASC, Austal, BAE Systems Australia, and Civmec. In 2002, the government suggested using the facilities at Henderson and Garden Island for a program with the United States Seventh Fleet. This program was called "sea-swap".
