Munster is a suburb located in Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Cockburn.

History of Munster's Name and Area

Munster got its name in 1954. It was named after Lake Munster, which is now called Lake Coogee. Lake Munster was named after Prince William, who was the Earl of Munster. He later became King William IV.

Before 1954, this area was known as South Coogee since the 1870s. Some older residents still use this name. The area also holds historical sites. These include the first settlement by Thomas Peel called Clarence townsite. You can also find remains of cottages built by Pensioner Guards near Lake Coogee in the 1880s.

In 1895, a postal guide said that Lake Munster was also known as Coogee. Later, the name Coogee was used more for the area north-west of the lake. Other parts became known as Woodman Point and South Coogee in the 1950s. Finally, Munster was officially chosen as the suburb's name in 1954.

Changes to Munster's Boundaries

In 2019, the City of Cockburn decided to change Munster's borders. The north-western part of Munster became a new suburb called Lake Coogee. A part in the south-west was added to the suburb of Henderson. Only the eastern part of Munster stayed as the original suburb. These changes officially started on March 30, 2020.

Geography and Local Industries

Munster is surrounded by several roads. Fancote Avenue is to the north. Lorimer and Henderson Roads are to the east. Russell Road is to the south, and Rockingham Road is to the west.

The suburb is home to the Cockburn Cement works. This factory affects how the land around it can be used. It limits how much the area can grow with new homes. Until 2020, a part of the Australian Marine Complex was also in Munster. This included the Technology Precinct, which has Raytheon Australia. It also had a new TAFE facility, the Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training (ACEPT).
