Henrique Soares da Costa (born April 11, 1963 – died July 18, 2020) was a Brazilian Roman Catholic bishop. He served as the bishop of the Diocese of Palmares from 2014 until he passed away in 2020.

Life and Education
Henrique Soares da Costa began his religious journey in 1981. He entered the Maceió Seminary, a special school for people who want to become priests. In 1984, he earned a degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of Alagoas.
Becoming a Monk
From 1985 to 1989, he spent time as a novice. This means he was testing out life as a monk. He lived at the São Bento Monastery in Rio de Janeiro. He also spent time at the Trappist Monastery of Nossa Senhora do Novo Mundo in Curitiba.
Studying Theology
In 1990, he returned to the Maceió Seminary. There, he started studying Theology, which is the study of religious faith. The next year, he moved to Rome, Italy. He finished his theology studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He also earned a master's degree in Dogmatic Theology.
Becoming a Priest and Bishop
Henrique Soares da Costa was ordained as a priest on August 15, 1992. As a priest, he held several important roles.
Roles as a Priest
- He was the leader of the Nossa Senhora do Livramento Church in Maceió.
- From 1994 to 2009, he taught theology at the Maceió Provincial Seminary.
- He also taught at other religious schools in Olinda and Recife.
- He was a member of important church groups in the Archdiocese of Maceió.
- He helped coordinate groups for everyday church members.
Becoming a Bishop
On April 1, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI chose him for a new role. He was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Aracaju. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop. He was officially made a bishop on June 19, 2009. This ceremony was led by Dom Antônio Muniz Fernandes.
Later, on March 19, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him as the main bishop. He became the bishop of the Diocese of Palmares.
Later Life and Passing
On July 4, 2020, Bishop Costa was admitted to a hospital in Recife. He had a serious breathing problem caused by COVID-19. His diocese shared that he was calm and peaceful about his condition. He passed away on July 18, 2020, at 57 years old. His death was due to complications from the virus. He was the third Brazilian bishop to die because of COVID-19. His body was taken to his hometown of Palmares.
Possible Sainthood
After Bishop Soares da Costa passed away, many Brazilian Catholics began to ask for his canonization. This is a process where the Catholic Church investigates if someone should be recognized as a saint. He is currently considered a possible candidate for sainthood.
