Sir Henry Cholmley (born 1556, died 1616) was an important person in English history. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He came from a place called Roxby in Whitby Strand.

Early Life and Education

Henry Cholmley was the only son of Sir Richard Cholmley, who lived in Whitby, Yorkshire. Henry went to several famous universities to study. First, he studied at Hart Hall, Oxford around 1568. Later, in 1573, he went to Jesus College, Cambridge and then Caius College, Cambridge. After his university studies, he learned about law at Lincoln's Inn in 1577.

In 1596, Henry's half-brother passed away. This meant that Henry inherited the family home and lands in Whitby.

Political Career

In 1597, Sir Henry Cholmley was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Westmorland. An MP is someone elected by people to represent them and help make decisions in the Parliament.

In 1603, he was given the special title of "Sir" and became a knight. This was a great honor given by the King or Queen.

Family and Beliefs

Around 1575, Sir Henry married Margaret Babthorpe. Her father was Sir William Babthorpe. Henry and Margaret had three sons and nine daughters. Their daughter, Barbara Cholmley, married a man named Thomas Belasyse, 1st Viscount Fauconberg.

Margaret, Sir Henry's wife, was a very religious person and followed the Roman Catholic faith. However, in 1603, both Sir Henry and Margaret decided to change their religious beliefs and became Protestant.

Sir Henry Cholmley's son, Richard, took over the family's responsibilities after his father passed away.
