Henry Martyn Porter (born April 25, 1835 – died February 6, 1907) was a brave soldier who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He became a high-ranking officer, known as a colonel. He led a group of soldiers called the 7th Vermont Infantry. After his time in the army, he had a successful career in business.

Early Life and Education
Henry Martyn Porter was born in 1835. He went to Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, and finished his studies in 1857. After college, he decided to become a teacher.
He taught in a few different places. In 1857, he taught in Sutherland Falls, Vermont. From 1858 to 1859, he taught in Rupert, Vermont. He also taught in New York City in 1859.
Serving in the Civil War
In 1861, Henry Porter joined the U.S. Army. He started as a private, which is the lowest rank for a soldier. He was part of the New York National Guard.
He quickly moved up through the ranks. He became a captain in the Vermont Infantry. Eventually, he reached the high rank of colonel.
Important Role in New Orleans
From 1863 to 1864, Colonel Porter had a special job in the city of New Orleans. He was the provost marshal. A provost marshal is like a military police chief. They help keep order and enforce rules in an area controlled by the army.
Colonel Porter served in the army for five years, until 1865. This was the year the Civil War ended.
Life After the War
After leaving the military, Henry Porter started a new career. He worked for a company called the American Bank Note Company. This company makes important things like money and stamps.
He led a department at the company for more than 22 years. He was also a member of several important clubs. These included the Loyal Legion, the Lotus Club, the Lawyer's Club, and the Union League Club.
Henry Martyn Porter passed away on February 6, 1907, when he was 71 years old. He was buried in West Cemetery in Middlebury, Vermont.
