He held several key roles during his life. From 1859 to 1866, he was the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This was a special position in the royal household. He also served as Lord Warden of the Stannaries from 1888 to 1908.

Early Life and School

Henry John Reynolds-Moreton was born on June 25, 1827. His birthplace was Sherborne, a town in Dorset, England. He was the oldest son of Henry Reynolds-Moreton, 2nd Earl of Ducie. His mother was Elizabeth Dutton.

He went to a famous school called Eton. This is a well-known boarding school for boys in England.

Becoming a Politician

In 1852, Henry Moreton became a member of Parliament. He was elected as the MP for Stroud. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of voters in Parliament.

The next year, in 1853, his father passed away. Henry then inherited his father's title and became the Earl of Ducie. This meant he joined the House of Lords. The House of Lords is one of the two parts of the UK Parliament.

In 1859, he was made a member of the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the British monarch. At the same time, he was appointed Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. He kept this job until 1866. During this time, Lord Palmerston and later Lord Russell were the Prime Ministers.

Other Important Roles

Besides his work in Parliament, Lord Ducie had many other important jobs. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire from 1857 to 1911. A Lord Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county.

He was also the Lord Warden of the Stannaries in Cornwall. This role involved managing the tin mines in Cornwall. He held this position from 1888 to 1908. He was also part of the Council of the Prince of Wales.

In 1906, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. This is an award given by the monarch for personal service.

Lord Ducie was also involved with the military. He was made an Honorary Colonel of a volunteer army group. This group was called the 1st Administrative Battalion, Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteer Corps. He held this honorary title for 40 years.

His Family Life

Lord Ducie married his cousin, Julia Langston, on May 24, 1849. They had two children together:

Sadly, the Countess of Ducie passed away in February 1895. Lord Ducie remained a widower for the rest of his life. He died in Gloucester in October 1921, when he was 94 years old.

Because his only son had died before him, Lord Ducie's titles went to his younger brother. His brother was Berkeley Moreton, 4th Earl of Ducie.

Tortworth Court and Plants

Between 1848 and 1853, Lord Ducie had a grand house built called Tortworth Court. He lived there for many years. He spent a lot of time collecting unusual and rare plants. He brought these plants from all over the world to plant in the grounds of Tortworth Court.

Today, many of these plants are still there. The grounds of Tortworth Court are now one of the most important arboretums in England. An arboretum is a place where many different kinds of trees are grown for study or display.

Sports and Hobbies

Lord Ducie enjoyed sports, especially cricket. He played one county-level cricket match for Shropshire in 1862. He also played for his local club, Shrewsbury.

He was also a patron of hunting. A writer named Knightley William Horlock dedicated his book about managing hunting dogs to Lord Ducie.
