Henry White (born 1819, died 1903) was a talented man from London. He worked as a lawyer, but he was also known as one of Britain's best landscape photographers. He took amazing pictures of nature and outdoor scenes.

Henry White's Early Life and Law Career

Henry White was born in London on June 2, 1819. He was the third of six children. His father, Richard Samuel White, was also a lawyer. Henry's mother was Bridget Mylen.

The White family lived in Brunswick Square in Bloomsbury, London. Henry followed in his father's footsteps and trained to become a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer. He joined his father's law firm.

The firm was first called White, Carew & White. Later, it became White & Son in 1841. Henry continued to work as a solicitor even after his father passed away in 1859.

In 1847, Henry White married Louisa Ann Lindley. She was the daughter of a quarry owner from Mansfield. Henry and Louisa had three children together: Henry, Louisa, and Alice. They were born between 1849 and 1852.

Henry White is famous for his amazing skills as an amateur photographer. He took many beautiful pictures in the 1850s and 1860s. His photos helped set the standard for landscape photography in Britain during the 1800s.

He mostly photographed charming English landscapes. Many of his pictures were taken in Surrey and North Wales. He often captured scenes like cottages, mills, and fields. He also took close-up photos of plants and other natural elements.

Joining Photography Societies

Henry White joined the Photographic Society of London in 1855. He was even the treasurer for this society from 1866 to 1872. He shared his photographs in their special albums in 1855 and 1857. He was also a member of the Photographic Society of Great Britain.

Exhibitions and Awards

Henry White showed his photographs a lot. Between 1855 and 1863, he displayed at least 237 pictures. People loved his work and he received many awards.

He won the highest medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. His landscape photos also won a gold medal at an exhibition in Brussels in 1856. That same year, White published a collection of photos showing views of London.

He also showed his work at the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition in 1857. In 1862, his photos were part of the International Exhibition.

One of his most famous photos is a beautiful landscape taken in northern Wales in 1856. It shows a family, likely his own, enjoying nature. This picture perfectly balances small details with a wide, atmospheric feeling. It shows how much a city person like Henry loved being in natural places.
