Herbert Deakyne (born December 29, 1867 – died May 28, 1945) was an important officer and engineer in the United States Army. He worked on many big projects in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He helped build and improve things for the country. He also became a brigadier general and served during World War I.

Herbert Deakyne's Early Life and Training

Herbert Deakyne was born on December 29, 1867. His hometown was Deakyneville, in Delaware. His family had lived there since the 1700s.

He first studied at Delaware College. After two years, he went to the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. He studied there for four years and finished in 1890. After graduating, he joined the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Becoming a U.S. Army Engineer

From 1890 to 1893, Deakyne continued his engineering studies. He attended the Engineering School of Application. This school was located at Willets Point, in Queens, New York.

After his studies, he started working as an army engineer. From 1893 to 1900, he was in California. There, he worked on important projects. These included improving rivers, harbors, and building defenses. He also served on the California Debris Commission for a few years.

Important Engineering Projects

Herbert Deakyne worked in many different places. From 1901 to 1903, he was in Florida. Then, he moved to Fort Leavenworth from 1903 to 1905.

Working in Different Places

He spent time in the Philippines from 1905 to 1907. For a few months in 1907, he was the chief engineering officer there. After that, from 1908 to 1912, he worked in the Philadelphia area. From 1912 to 1916, he focused on projects along the Missouri River. In 1916, he worked in the main office for the Army Corps of Engineers.

Herbert Deakyne and World War I

In 1917, Deakyne graduated from the United States Army War College. Soon after, in August 1917, he traveled to France. This was during World War I.

In France, he commanded the Tenth Railway Engineers. They worked in Saint-Nazaire until January 1918. From January to May 1918, he led the 11th Railway Engineers. They worked along the British front in northern France. Later, he became the Director of Railways and Roads. This was a very important job during the war.

His Final Years in the Army

After World War I, Herbert Deakyne returned to the United States. He worked in New Orleans for a while. Then, from 1920 to 1925, he was in San Francisco.

From 1926 to 1929, he served as an assistant to the Chief of Engineers. For a short time in 1929, he even became the Chief of Engineers himself. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general in 1926. Herbert Deakyne retired from the Army in 1931. He lived in California until he passed away on May 28, 1945.
