Herbert E. Farnsworth (born August 23, 1834 – died July 4, 1908) was an American soldier. He fought bravely in the American Civil War. Farnsworth received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the United States. He earned it for his actions during the Battle of Trevilian Station in Virginia. This important event happened on June 11, 1864. He was given this special award on April 1, 1898.

Herbert E. Farnsworth was born in Perrysburg, New York. His birthday was August 23, 1834. He joined the army in September 1861. He became a bugler for the 10th New York Cavalry. A bugler plays a bugle to give signals to soldiers.
His Military Service
By June 1864, Farnsworth had become a Sergeant Major. This is a high rank for an enlisted soldier. He showed great courage during the Battle of Trevilian Station. Later, in August 1864, he was made a first lieutenant. This meant he became an officer. He finished his service in June 1865.
Later Life and Legacy
Farnsworth passed away on July 4, 1908. He was buried in the Pomeroy City Cemetery in Washington state. His bravery during the Civil War is remembered. He is honored as a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
