Herman is a city in Grant County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 437 at the 2010 census.

History

Herman was platted in 1875, and named for Herman Trott, a railroad official. A post office has been in operation at Herman since 1872.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.07 square miles (2.77 km2), all of it land.

Minnesota State Highways 9 and 27 are two of the main routes in the community.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 437 people, 216 households, and 114 families living in the city. The population density was 408.4 inhabitants per square mile (157.7/km2). There were 254 housing units at an average density of 237.4 per square mile (91.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.4% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Asian, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.

There were 216 households, of which 20.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 47.2% were non-families. 43.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 23.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.81.

The median age in the city was 48.4 years. 21.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18% were from 25 to 44; 30.3% were from 45 to 64; and 24.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.5% male and 53.5% female.

Community

Herman was the home of the annual Herman Iron Pour, where individuals could learn how to mold and cast iron art.

Herman is also more widely known for its high number of eligible bachelors. The story drew worldwide recognition and later was made into a fictional movie Herman U. S. A..

Herman is also the home to the Grant County Fair.
