Joining the Army and World War I
In October 1906, when he was 18, Niel joined the Imperial German Army. He played the trombone and oboe in a military band in Potsdam. During the First World War, he became a bandmaster. A bandmaster is the leader of a military band. He led the band for the 423rd German Infantry Regiment.
After the First World War
After the war ended in 1919, Niel left the army. He worked in government administration for a few years. In 1927, he helped start an orchestra in Potsdam called the Ritterschaftsorchester. He wrote music and lyrics for this orchestra.

During this time, Niel focused on writing marches and songs. These songs became very popular with the Nazi Party. They were played widely during the Second World War. Niel also conducted (led) all the RAD music bands at big Nazi Party events in Nuremberg.
The Herms Niel-Doppelfanfare
Herms Niel also invented a special musical instrument. It was a type of fanfare trumpet called the Herms Niel-Doppelfanfare. This trumpet could play in two different musical keys. It was made in 1938 by a factory that usually made accordions.
