Hersey R. Hawkins Jr. (born September 29, 1966) is a former American professional basketball player. He was a talented shooting guard who played for 12 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Hersey was known by his nickname, “The Big Kiss.”

College Basketball Career
Hersey Hawkins played college basketball at Bradley University for four seasons. He was the starting shooting guard in all 125 games the team played. By the time he graduated in 1988, he had scored 3,008 points. This made him one of the top scorers in NCAA Division I history.
In the 1986–87 season, Hersey was one of the top five scorers in NCAA Division I. He averaged 27.2 points per game. The next season, 1987–88, was even more amazing. He averaged 36.3 points per game!
Before joining the NBA, Hersey was part of the USA men's national basketball team. This team played in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. They won a bronze medal.
NBA Career Highlights
Playing for the Philadelphia 76ers
In 1988, Hersey was chosen as the 6th player in the 1988 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. But his rights were quickly traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. There, he became the second-best scorer after Charles Barkley.
Hersey was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1989. In 1991, he had a great season, averaging 22.1 points. He also played in the NBA All-Star Game. In one game against the Boston Celtics, he made 9 steals. He also scored a career-high 43 points in a game against the Orlando Magic.
Time with the Charlotte Hornets
In 1993, Hersey was traded to the Charlotte Hornets. He played two good seasons there. In 1994, he had a career-high 14 rebounds in a game against the Houston Rockets. He wore jersey number 32 for one season before changing to number 3.
Joining the Seattle SuperSonics
After his time in Charlotte, Hersey was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in 1995. In 1996, he was a key player for the Sonics. He played alongside stars like Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. His team made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the Chicago Bulls. In his last season with Seattle, he won the NBA Sportsmanship Award. This award is given to players who show fair play and respect.
Short Time with the Chicago Bulls
In 1999, Hersey was traded to his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls. However, he had some injuries during this year. He played in 61 games and averaged 7.9 points per game.
Returning to Charlotte
Hersey returned to the Charlotte Hornets in 2000 for his final season. He retired from basketball in 2001. He finished his career with a total of 14,470 points.
Life After Playing Basketball
After retiring from playing, Hersey Hawkins became an assistant coach. He worked at Estrella Foothills High School in Arizona for the 2006–2007 season. He also took part in the Hoopfest event in 2009.
Currently, Hersey works for the Portland Trail Blazers. He is their Player Development Director. This means he helps players improve their skills.
Hersey is married and has three sons. His son, Corey, holds a high school record for most points in Arizona. Corey has played college basketball and professionally. Hersey's other sons, Brandon and Devon, also played college basketball. Former NFL player Flozell Adams is Hersey's cousin.
