The Hersey River is a small stream located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA. It is about 13.4 miles (21.6 kilometers) long. This river starts in Lincoln Township in northwest Osceola County. It begins where two smaller streams, Hersey Creek and East Branch Hersey Creek, join together.

The Hersey River flows mostly south for its first two miles, running close to a main road called U.S. Route 131. It then continues south through a small lake called Lake No Sho Mo, which was created by a dam. The river then passes under U.S. Route 10 and flows into Reed City. In Reed City, the river turns east and then southeast. Finally, it reaches the village of Hersey, where it flows into the larger Muskegon River.

What is a Tributary?

A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger river or lake. Think of it like a branch joining a bigger tree trunk. The Hersey River has several tributaries that add water to it along its journey.

Understanding a River's Drainage Basin

A drainage basin (also called a watershed) is an area of land where all the water, from rain or melting snow, drains into a single river, lake, or ocean. Imagine a giant bowl; all the water that falls inside that bowl will eventually flow to the lowest point. For the Hersey River, its drainage basin includes many towns and areas.

Areas in the Hersey River's Drainage Basin

The Hersey River's drainage basin covers parts of two counties in Michigan:
