Hewlett got its name from the Hewlett family. The first Hewlett to live in this area was George Hewlett, who was born in England in 1634. He was part of a group of English settlers who came to Long Island from Connecticut. They worked with the Dutch governors and the native people to create a new community in what is now Hempstead.
