A Look at Higganum's Past

The name "Higganum" comes from an old Native American word. It might mean "at the tomahawk rock" or "Great Bend in River." Both names describe features of the area.

Early Economic Life

Around the year 1800, Higganum Center was a very busy place. It had lots of water power from streams, which was great for factories. Higganum Landing, on the Connecticut River, was a natural harbor. This made it an important port for ships and a place where ships were built from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s.

A big factory called Scovil Hoe Company was once in Higganum. They made hoes, which are tools used to prepare soil for growing crops like cotton and tobacco. The area around Higganum Landing is so important that it's now a special historic site. It's called the Higganum Landing Historic District and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Higganum Today

Today, Higganum is still the main center for shopping and community activities in Haddam. It has a nice town green with a memorial for veterans. You can also find a Shad museum, a youth center, and a gazebo there.
