High Crossing is a fascinating ghost town located in Tabernacle Township, within Burlington County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, often because the main reason for the town's existence disappeared.

This historic spot is found deep inside the beautiful Wharton State Forest. It is also part of the larger New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a special area known for its unique plants and animals.

Where is High Crossing Located?

High Crossing got its name because it was an important meeting point. It's where an old road called "Tuckerton Road" crossed a railway line.

Tuckerton Road: An Old Travel Route

Tuckerton Road was once a busy stagecoach route. It connected the city of Camden with Tuckerton. People used this road to travel and transport goods across New Jersey.

The Central Railroad of New Jersey

The railroad line that crossed Tuckerton Road was part of the Southern Division of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. This railway connected Red Bank in the north with Bridgeton in the south. The trains stopped running on this line in the early 1980s, and it was later abandoned.

Emilio Carranza Memorial

Just north of High Crossing, there is a special memorial. It marks the spot where a brave Mexican aviator named Emilio Carranza crashed and died in 1928. He was on a flight from New York to Mexico City when a storm hit.

High Crossing Today

Even though it's a ghost town, High Crossing is still a place where people gather.

A Hub for Off-Road Adventures

Today, several sand roads meet at High Crossing. This makes it a popular spot for people who enjoy off-road vehicles. It's a great place for adventurers to meet before exploring the sandy trails of the Pinelands.

Exploring the Batona Trail

A short distance east of High Crossing, you can find the Batona Trail. This is a long hiking trail, about 50 mi (80 km) (80 kilometers) in length. It connects Ong's Hat with the Bass River State Forest. The trail is perfect for hikers who want to experience the unique nature of the Pinelands.
